Justice for J6 Rally

At today’s Justice of J6 rally, protestors were outnumbered by journalists, counter-protestors, police, police bikes, and snow plow trucks. In the end maybe a couple of handful of actual protestors showed up and at points it was hard to tell who was there actually supporting the rally in the sea of police officers, journalists, and just curious locals. In the end none of the fences were needed and as so often in the US, rather than doing a good job the first time (on Jan 6), there is a lot of security theater afterwards.

Washington in the Time of Covid-19

Cherry Blossoms

perfect social distancing

thank god for amazon

there is hope

this was supposed to be the peak weekend for the annual cherry blossom festival. thousands of tourists flocking to the city to take in the cherry trees around the tidal basin and then enjoying a wonderful day in the city. while the weather certainly did its part (it was a stunning day, crisp, but deep blue skies) covid-19 had other plans. since last Monday most schools and officers were closed. earlier in the week most restaurants and bars closed (or switched to deliver/pick up only). and tourists likely canceled their planned trips already weeks ago. ideally, people were supposed to stay at home, and if outside they shouldn’t mingle and keep a distance of at least six feet from each other. in general people adhered to this guidance (the shocking and terrible numbers from Italy and Spain probably had an impact). walking past countless closed stores, restaurants, and bars, all which would be busy on a day like this the economic impact will be stark. some stores are trying their best, but it will be really tough, especially for smaller stores. let’s hope this is over soon – keep a distance, wash your hands.
